Reflection

1.)  I expected to learn a little more about the history and philsophy of art. I also expected to do some hands on exploring about art, and get into the different techniques used in art.  These expectations were all met! I learned a lot of information about art from the videos and the tetbook, and got to experience some hands on activities with the various projects.

2.) From my inital posting, I wrote that art was all around and that anything could be art.  I still define that as being art, but with a little more.  Art is a creative process, and includes a variety of principles and elements.  Art catches the viewers eyes, and interests them in a number of ways.

3.) I my first posting I did not put in that I had a favorite artist.  From this course I would have to say that my favorite artist is Vincent Van Gogh. I have always admired  The Starry Night, but from discovering more of his pieces like the Wheat Field and Cypress Trees, I was really interested in his use of colors and the ways his artwork draws you right in.

4.) I enjoy taking online courses. This was my second online class and I enjoyed it just like I enjoyed my first one.  My inital post discussed the same thing, and I think I will take more online classes in the future.

Self-Portrait

1.)  I selected "Self-Portrait" by Kathe Kollowitz (1921, etching) because the portrait seemed like it had a story.  The man is leaning on his arm and looks distress about something, it makes me ask questions. I chose "Self-Portrait" by Ivan Le Lorraine Albright (1948, lithograph) because it presented itself in another manner from normal self-potraits. I also like the use of color, and the overall gray scale.  I chose "Self-portrait with Monkey" by Frida Kahlo (1938, oil on masonite) because I love the use of color and how bold the portrait it is.

2.) I selected to use pencil because I think that pencil flows easier and is easy to erase and to overall work with!

3.) I always found it difficult to create a self-portrait of myself, because I can never really get it to look like me.  Here, I found the same problem but I know that im not an artist so I just tried my best.  I found the eyes and the smile to be the thoughest.

4.) This piece represents me because it is me, and I used a picture of me to create it.

5.) I used the element of color in this piece.  I created a gray scale with shading and a pencil.

6.) I felt the project was okay, and I kind of enjoyed it.  I have done self-portraits before, and they never really come out the way I would like them to.

7.) Overall, my final artwork looks sort of like the picture and I tried my best.

Project 5 Reflection

1.) I reviewed Jenna Fanara's project, "Color Effect on Emotions in Art" and I reviews "The Wonders of Life" by Emily Graham.

2.) I selected the third one I reviewed which was Abbey Abate's, "Youthful Innocence Caught in the Moment." When I looked at this exhibit and saw each of the artworks in it I felt the innocence that children have and I understood the youthful innocence theme.  I love children and what they bring to life, and this exhibit has really been able to protray how children are so innocent and great.

3.)  I have to say that I did not face any challenges when writing this article.  I saw my requirements and the exhibit really made it easy to fulfill the objective.

4.) I like critiquing other works because it gives them feedback and allows them to understand what their project and hard work has brought to others.

5.)  Yes, I would like to read what others have said about my project.

6.) I would rate my article a 10!  I rate it a 10 because I feel that I have provided the correct format and have fulfilled the requirements that I was given.

7.) I did enjoy working on this project.  It was fun to see what others came up with when doing project 4, and it was fun to see so many diverse topics that were provided.

Week 15 Video Review

Greenburg on Art Criticism:  Greenburg discusses the beliefs in which it is much harder to write about visual art, than it is to write about literature.  It is discussed, that their was crisis in his younger years, which has changed, and there is not much anymore.  He discussed that fact that artists today are proving themselves, and so much not the modern art.

Greenberg on Pollock:  Greenberg met Pollock outside of a corner store.  Greeenburg reviewed easel paintings and that of which Pollock's.  Pollock is discussed in the fact that some believe that he was not a real or true painter, and that he was an outsider of the New York City scene.

Introduction to Italian Renaissance:  The film discusses the various artists in the time of the Renaissance.  Giotto was the first to make way into the Renaissance, and his work represented beautiful Byzantine.  The Renaissance artist sculpted, painted, and developed mosaics about the world around them.  Ghiberti was another artist discusses, and how he brought depth and human form to his works.  Donatello, created "David" and the idea of contrapposto.  Uccello developed works and brought perspective to the human and animal form.

The Critics:Stories from the inside pages:  Criticism helps open up artwork in order for people to see it in a different way. Critics make it possible to convey information about artworks to the public.  They get others thinking, and perform reviews on artists' artwork which are informed opinions.

The Colonial Encounter Views of nonwestern Art and Culture:  The Dahome exhibit brought impression to the World Fair.  The french were focused on the imperialism, and celebrated its self images, some believe this work did not reflect much of colonies.

Jackson Pollock: Michael Fried & T.J. Clark in Conversation:  Fried focused on the aesthetics of Pollocks work.  Clark focused more on the historical role.  Both discuss Pollock's work, and how brought upon an impact in the art world.

These video do relate to the overall art criticism project. Criticism does allow for opinion to take place when creating and exhibition and when creating the project, I thought about the criticism that might take place for my exhibit.

These films led me to understand more about art criticism and what it embodies.  The film True Critics, allowed me to understand the process, point, and impact of what art critics convey.  They are able to bring information to the public and allow others to look at artwork in a different way.

Project #4 Reflection

When creating my art exhibition I felt the process was very fun and easy.  Coming up with the theme and name of my art exhibition took only a few minutes. I have always admired trees and how they are a symbol for many things including life, growth, or change, and I just came up with the idea to have trees be the theme of my exhibit.  I knew that there were several artworks that had the subject of trees so I knew that I would have no trouble.  When selecting 25 works of art I found it to be very interesting and it allowed me to see so many different types of work that included the focal point of trees.  After I selected my 25 artworks I put them into my powerpoint and then created my exhibit.  I think project 4 was very fun and very interesting!

week 13 and 14 video review

1.) From the film, The Lowdown on Lowbrow, the term "lowbrow" is discussed.  Lowbrow is an art form that relates to pop surrealism.  The artist, Robert Williams invented the term, and at the time, himself and other artists that created lowbrow art, were turned away from galleries and museums. They then needed to make their own art in their own space.  Lowbrow was many influences like pop, car, and folk culture art.
Displaying Modern Art, was a film that discussed, the Tate Modern, which was a gallery that displayed "theme" based museum sections.  The theme base sections included artists like Richard Lang and Monet's water Lillie's.
Bones of Contention, was about the discovery of Native American bones, during the U.S. genocide.  After finding the bones, controversy surrounded them and scientists, archaeologists, and historians fought over the decision to keep and study them or return them back to their ancestors.
The last film, George Eastman House, was about Eastman who was the "father of popular photography."  He created a house that stores a visual history of photography, and how he impacted the world of photography, and technology. He impacted the world of motion pictures, like when he created the first Native American school, which taught the restoration and preservation of motion pictures.

2.)  My art exhibition has the theme of trees, and incorporating a variety to artworks that include the subject of trees, and the films did not really portray any of my theme to them.  The four films discussed a variety of things but the information given did not relate to well with my project subject.

3.)  I thought the films were informational, and gave an overall understanding to the subject of art curation, and I did learn a lot about themes that are involved in an art exhibition.

Week 12: Video Review

1.) I chose Abstract Expessionism and Pop, because from the readings I found expressionism and pop art to be very interesting and I wanted to know more.  I chose Uncertainty: Modernity and Art, because the title caught my eye with the "uncertainty" word, and was wanting to know what it was about.  From the two films above, Andy Warhol: Image of an Image, caught my eye because the two films discussed the artist, and I wanted to know more about the artist.  The fourth film I chose, was The Art of Henry Moore. I did not know of the artist, Henry Moore and wanted to get to know him.

2.) Abstract Expressionsim and Pop, described abstract art, and examined the pop art style.  It discussed the pop art in the 60's with Andy Warhol, and how it was the first movement of art in the 20th century since futurism.  Uncertainty: Modernity and Art, explored modern art, and how it documents the metamorphosis of mankind.  Modern art expreses a message which is, "uncertainty."  The film discusses artists like Picasso, and Warhol, and the contributions of abstract, expressionism, and cubism, to the modern art world.  The third film, Andy Warhol: Image of an Image, discusses the history of the pop artists' work, and how is work went from being commercial to the experimental with advertising images.  Warhol's famous pop art was inspired by Mariyln Monro and Liz Taylor.  His famous silk screen is of Elizabeth Taylor, entitled "Ten Lizes."  The last film was The Art of Henry Moore.  The film discusses the modern artist and the history of his work.  It reveals his childhood, where he started to show his artistic talent, and discusses the several works done by Moore, specifically his famous sketches on London's underground shelters during WWII.

3.) These videos relate to the reading in the text by explaing several artists and several art styles.  Warhol is discussed in three of the films, just as the text does.  Also Uncertainty: Modernity and ARt, really relates to the text by explaing the various art styles of modern art, like cubism, expressionism, abstract, and pop art.

4.) I felt films were very interesting and gave a sense of understanding to what I was reading in the text.  I espeacially liked the films on Andy Warhol, becasue I enjoy the artist and like the pop art style.  I was able to see more of the pop art style in the films as well as the text.

Art Gallery Visit #2

Step 1: The Exhibition
1.)  The exhibit that I took my three artworks from was the "Telling Tales" exhibit.
2.) The theme of this exhibition was telling stories about spiritual beliefs. Along with stories told, the pieces of art also reflect politics and society.

Step 2: The Gallery
1.) The type of lighting used was bright, florescent lights.
2.) The color used on the wall was plain white paint.
3.) The materials used in the interior architecture of the space include various tools that the artists use to display their pieces of work.
4.) The movement of the viewer through that gallery space is steady and calm, in order for the viewer to accurately take in each piece of artwork.

Step 3: The Artwork
1.) The artworks are organized by artist, and medium.
2.) The artworks are similar because they each tell a story.
3.) The artworks are different by the various materials used by each artist.
4.) The artworks are framed by space from each other.
5.) The artworks are identified and labeled by information given about the artist, title, date, and materials used.
6.) The proximity of the artworks from each other are evenly spaced out.  There is a clear boundary between each piece of artwork.

The first artwork from "Telling Tales" is by Lesley Dill.  Divide Light #2, 2002. Paper, glue, thread, tea and pins.
Description: The hand seen in the piece is a cast of Dill's actual hand.  The hand is holding words, that were inspired by the poet, Emily Dickinson.  Thread is the hanging down from the hand.
Analysis: Motion is an element seen by the hand. It is as if the hand is grasping and holding the words in action.  Variety is also a principle seen.  The various materials used, bring variety to the piece.
Bracket: I am reminded on hands running through hair, when I look at this piece.  The hand is holding the words as well as the thread that looks like hair being held.
Interpretation:  Dill was inspired by the words of Emily Dickinson.  She wanted the viewer to understand that powerful words of the poet, and the hand hold the words is a symbol of what the artist wanted to portray.  Dill wants the viewer to grasp powerful messages in their hands and life.

David Nash, Small Ladder, 1978. Wood.
Description:  There is a ladder, made out of natural wood. Nash views the ladder as being a transition from one space of another.
Analysis:  Balance is seen by the way the ladder is even on each side.  Line is also an element seen.  The tree branches lead the eye up the ladder.
Bracket: Nash provided a very direct ladder that was built from natural wood.  The ladder symbolizes the climb it takes to get to where you want in life.
Interpretation: I feel that when I look at the small ladder, it makes me want to physically climb it. I believe that Nash wanted the viewer to feel that way, and by wanting to physically climb the ladder, it represents an emotional feeling that you want to climb up towards your dreams.

Jiri Kolar, Cycladic Heads, 1978. Chiasmage on wood.
Description: This piece was created by a collage technique known as Chiasmage.  Chiasmage is a technique that uses torn paper fragments with text on them, which are then glued down.  The three heads are representing the Cyclades, which are a collection of islands near Greece.  The three head each have their own elements that represent ancient Greek culture.
Analysis: Variety is a principle used, and it can been seen by the differences in the three heads. Emphasis is also seen.  The middle bold black head directs the viewers eye right to its presence.
Bracket:  The artist wanted the to tell a story about the Cyclade islands and the civilizations.  The heads symbolize the figures seen in the ancient Greek culture.
Interpretation:  The chiasmage collage technique used by Kolar gives each head figure it own personality.  The viewer sees a story in each figure and wants to know more.  The unity of the piece tells history of the Cyclades civilization.

When I visited the Albright Knox for the second time I felt it was even better then before.  I enjoyed looking at the different exhibitions and i really enjoyed the exhibit, "Telling Tales." I felt that looking at the pieces of art in a different perspective was refreshing.  I liked analyzing the different aspects of the exhibit and I particularly liked this exhibit because it told stories of history and they way others see the world.

Week Eleven: Video Review

1.)  I chose, Matisse and Picasso, because I have always enjoyed the works of the two artists, and I wanted to know more about the history and techniques of each.  Expressionism was chosen because I like reading about the style of expressionism and I wanted to see and hear more about the style.  I chose Dance at the Moulin de La Galette, because I recognized the title of the painting by Renoir and was interested in knowing more.  I chose, A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, because I did not know the title and was curious about what it was.

2.) Matisse and Picasso was a film about the two famous artists, Matisse and Picasso.  The film examined Matisses' life, as well as Picasso's.  Matisse was a rational, structured painter.  Unlike, Picasso, who was impulsive and delivered himself into his paintings.  The film goes into the history of Matisse who moved from Paris to New York, and Picasso stayed in Paris.  Expressionism was a film that went into detail and highlighted the artists who adopted to expressionist style.  Edward Munch, Franz Marc, Kirchner, Max Beckmann, Georg Baselitz, and Anselm Kiefer, were all artists presented, who used expressionism in each of their pieces.  Dance at the Moulin de la Galette, was a film about the famous painting by Renoir.  The film discusses the history of the painting that Renoir painted to bring pleasure and to bring viewers back in time to Paris.  Renoir was an impressionist who focused on the romantic aspects of Paris.  The fourth film was, A Sunday on La Grande Jatte.  The film looks into the history of the painter, Georges Seurant.  His technique was pointillism which was seen in this painting.  The painting is examined and questioned , on the interesting characters.  The painting was completed at the island, La Grand Jatte, and the women fishing and questioned to be prostitutes.

3.)  The videos relate to the reading in the text by discussing the many artists and techniques that were discussed in the text. Expressionism, impressionism, pointillism, were some of the styles examined in the films as well as the text.  Also, Matisse and Picasso were topics of both the film and the readings.

4.) I thought the films were interesting and delivered a more in depth description to artists like Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, and Seurant.  I was able to see more examples to the various techniques like expressionism and pointillism, that gave me a better understanding to what I was reading.

Mask Material Exploration

Character Mask, from Java, 8 inches, painted wood, with hair.
Description: Used during a ritual, painted in a non-traditional way.  It was painted to make a "demon" look amusing.  This type of character mask rarely appears on the market. There are yellow, red, green, light pink, and white stripes going across the face. Large eyes, a big smile, a nose, and bold eyebrows.
Formal Analysis:  The use of color is seen in this mask.  Emphasis is seen in the eyes, they draw the viewer directly to them.  Pattern and rhythms are also seen by the repetitive stripes.

I chose this piece because I love the use of color.  The color, along with the eyes are so bold and creative. I am just drawn into the center of the eyes.

India Sacred Cow Mask, from Gujarat, India.  15 inches, embroidered cloth with mirrors and shells.
Description: Designed to lay on the forehead of a cow at celebrations.  It is cloth with various colors, and embroidered patters. Shells and mirrors are also incorporated..  It has geometric shapes like squares, rectangles, and circles.
Formal Analysis:  Pattern and Rhythm are seen by the various repeating shapes.  Color is also used with the various embroidered color tones.  Texture is also seen by the fabric, and embroidery.  Shape is represented by the multiple shapes, especially the rectangular eyes.

I chose this mask because I thought the material used was very unique.  I have never seen a mask made out f fabric, and it was so carefully crafted with the beautiful embroidery.

Decorative Mask, from Guerrero, 20 inches, painted wood.
Description:  "Decorative" describes new masks made for tourists and collectors in the Mexican city.  Seen here is two faces, the bottom is a sun, and the top is an angel with wings.  The faces are seen looking down.
Formal Analysis:  Color is certainly an element seen in this decorative mask.  The eyes can represent the principle of emphasis.  They draw the viewer to there downward look.  Also, the eyes looking down can be the principle of movement.  They show action and movement of what comes beneath them.

I chose this third mask because I found the inspiration of my mask in the use of the sun/star content.  I like the incorporation of two faces, and I that to be unique.  I haven't seen masks with two faces like this one.  I see a story in it, I am curious to what they are looking down at.

I used the element of color in my mask. The variety of the colors was what I wanted my mask to primarily be.  I feel the color is spontaneous and fun.  Shape is another element seen.  The star is the main shape of the mask, and the other shapes like triangles make up the ornamentation in the mask.  Line is also an element in the mask.  The lines coming from the star's vertex, draws the eye into the masks' eyes.  The principle of variety is seen as well.  The variations of shapes, designs, and colors bring the variety to the mask.

When creating mask I thought the whole process was fun.  I like doing hands on activities and this was just another activity that I enjoyed.  When viewing the other masks, I found inspiration and I immediately came up with the idea of a star.  From there it was easy, I drew a couple of sketches, then went onto my final piece. I drew the star, then just allowed my self to decorate it and give it character.  I enjoyed putting the final touches on it like using colored pencils to make designs and patterns.  Overall, I am happy with my final work, and feel that my mask is fun and colorful, just like I wanted!

Week 10:Video Review

1.) I selected the film, Buddhism because I have always been curious and interested in the beliefs of this religion and I wanted to know more. I chose the film Hinduism because I did not know much about this form of religion and felt the film could give me an understanding of what it is. African Art, was chosen because I liked reading about it in the book and wanted to see and hear more about the art style.  The Great Wave, was the fourth film chosen because I have heard and seen this artwork before and wanted to know the history of the painter and the process of its form.

2.) Buddhism, was a film about the spiritual beliefs behind the famous religion.  It discussed the spread of Buddhism in India and to other lands.  Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, wanted to find "Nirvana" which was a spiritual place to escape from the greed in life, once one found Nirvana they had a bliss to enlightenment.  After the death of Buddha, Buddhism split into two parts, "Hinayana" and "Mahayana," these two sub sects of Buddhism helped spread the philosophy and the beliefs across India.
African Art, was a film on the art of the African natives.  The art in Africa has cultural meaning and is shown in everyday life.  Art is displayed through clothing, utensil, hair styles, and even through masks.  African artists display art in everyday objects and use these objects to express their conceptual art style. The artists make artwork through mental images.
Hinduism, is a religion on India, and the film looks at the holiest city called Varanasi.  Hinduism worships Brahma or God, and teaches many ways to get to Brahma/god.  Art portrays gods in their sculptures and other pieces of art.  Hinduism uses art to display their spiritual beliefs in everyday life.
The Great Wave, was a film that looked into the best-known Japanese art called, "The Great Wave." The artist, Hokusai, made The Great Wave using geometric structures like circles and triangles. This piece of art is seen on everything and it has influenced Impressionism and the 1960s pop art.

3.) All of the videos relate to the readings in the text by their content.  The text looks into African Art, just like the African Art film.  Also, the film Buddhism discussed the beliefs and history of the religion, just like the text did.  Also The Great Wave talks about the Japanese art, just like the text examined.

4.)  These films were great.  They helped me understand the concepts of what Buddhism, Hinduism, African Art, and Japanese art is all about.  They allowed me to hear and see more of the history of each subject and allowed me to give examples of what the text in the readings were discussing.

Hands Exploring Line

1.) I found it to be very interesting when using my hands as the subject for this drawing.  I have never done a drawing of my hands so it was a good experience.

2.)  I selected pencil as my media to use.  I chose this media because I find it difficult to work with charcoal, and the pencil was really best for me. It was easy to use and it gave me the ability to be flexible.

3.)  When creating a drawing with my non-dominant hand which was my left, I found it to be easier than I thought it would be. It certainly felt different from my right hand, but tracing it was not that difficult. I did however not feel as confident of what the final product would turn out like, opposed to my dominant hand.

4.) Both hands look similar. The right hand which I drew with my left (non-dominant) looks slightly different from my left hand.  Meaning that the fingers of the right hand that accurate to my left hand.  All together I feel that both of the drawings represent what my hands look like.

5.) In the future, I would probably not consider using my non-dominant hand.  Just because it did feel different, and I was not that confident of what the final outcome would be.  I would stick with my right hand for future artworks!

Video Review Week Nine

1.) The video, The Drawings of Michelangelo was chosen because I was familiar with Michelangelo's work.  I love his painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and I was interested in knowing more about the artist.  I also chose the video, Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance because I was aware of Da Vinci's work as well and wanted to learn more of his work and himself as an artist.  El Greco: Rediscovery of a Master stood out to me because I did not recognize the name and was curious to who El Greco was.  The Night Watch (Rembrandt) sounded familiar and I new of the artist, Rembrandt, and I also previously learned about the piece of art, The Night Watch , so I like the other videos was curious and wanted to learn more.

2.)  The Drawings of Michelangelo:  In the British Museum of art there is many drawings that were drawn by the artist, Michelangelo. The artists' drawings can be seen by students today in the museum but were never shown in Michelangelo's time.  Drawings like the Body of Adam are just one of many, and these drawings were individual drafts of some of the figures painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Leonardo da Vinci, The Mind of the Renaissance: Described the early life of the artist.  From a young age da Vinci displayed his amazing gifts.  He has a mind that holds several disciplines in art.  His early life showed his passion for drawing and strong curiosity as well as comprehension.
El Greco, Rediscovery of a Master:  The video introduces and discusses the discovery of a "master painter."  El Greco was a Byzantine style trained painter, but was self-taught to paint in the Renaissance period.  He influences Picasso, with his many works.
The Night Watch:  This video, discusses the major large scale, monumental piece of art entitled, "The Night Watch" by the famous painter, Rembrandt.  The Night Watch is a controversial infamous piece of art that is complex to viewers and is an object to the Dutch pilgrimage.  It depicts symbolism and makes the viewer feel as if they are a part of a group.

3.)  These videos all relate to the readings in the text by describing the artists of The Renaissance period. Famous painters the Rembrandt, Michelangelo, and da Vinci are discussed in the text as well as the videos and they both give detail and understanding to each famous artist.

4.)  I feel that the films were interesting.  I really enjoyed the film of the drawings of Michelangelo. I found it amazing how there are actual preliminary drawings that are displayed to the public, and theses drawings show drafts of figures in the Sistine chapel ceiling.  I also gained more of an understanding to the renaissance period and its famous artists, which allowed me to connect more to the readings in the text.  Visually seeing and hearing about the information on the artists and the period let me grasp the full concepts.

Week 8:Video Review

1.)  I chose Late Gothic Art and Architecture, The Measure of all Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure, and Th Birth of the Middle Ages. I chose each of these films because I new a little something about the topic discussed, but I wanted to know more.

2.)  More Human then Human: The concepts that I learned from this film was that some of the greatest artist have used the human body as a foundation for their artworks.  The human body depicted in the artworks are not entirely resembling the actual human body.  In 1908, researchers found a statue of the female figure in the Danube River Valley.  Today, is not so much different from then.  People are still obsessed with the human body and about physical perfection.  You can see it the runways or in magazines.
Late Gothic Art:  The 1400's were seen by some as a tragedy, but this period was called, The Great Age of Gothic.  Merchants, nobles, and patrons all lived better as they invested in art.  Art was seen as powerful and a symbol of hierarchy in a society.
The Measure of all Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure:  This film discussed The Acropolis, which is in Athens, and it showed the Greek culture philosophy, art, architecture, and politics.  The 6th century was known as the Boom of architecture and sculpture.  The sculptures adapted a 3D effect which lead to realism.  Pottery was important because there were not images and the pottery would have pictures drawn onto them which showed everyday life.  The Olympics were also seen in the Greek society as a way to display the human body.
The Birth of the Middle Ages:  This film discussed how even though the middle ages were centuries ago, you can still see a sense of them in societies today.  A small town in Cameroon displays medieval feudalism, and there is the same system seen in Japan.  The middle ages are also still seen in some societies in Islam.

3.) The videos relate to the reading in text by discussing some of the same material.   For example, the Late Gothic Art and Architecture discussed the passion that society had for art and the text also discusses how society viewed art and specifically Gothic art. The films also discussed the obsession that some had about the human figure.  The text as well goes into depth on that subject as well.

4.)  I thought the films were interesting and allowed me to fully understand the art and architecture of past centuries. I was able to see more examples of art in the films, and which helped me to apply more understanding to the reading.

Video Review (4 Films)

1.) Important Facts:
         - Prairie Style:  Frank Lloyd Wright was the one who came up with the style.  This style
Incorporated wide open horizontal planes, that then blend with natural surroundings.  Wright first came up with the idea when he built single family homes.  He would design the homes using a horizontal band of rock or cement.  His concept was about "layering."
         - Architecture: the Science of Design:  This film brought up technology and science in the design of architecture.  Skyscrapers were designed using concrete and steel.  Wind tunnel testing was used to plan out or test for threats against skyscrapers.  Smart apartments are the up and coming new design.  The smart apartments use computers to link to the central nervous system of the house, to then fulfill the users needs.
         - Classical Architecture:  Discusses the use of classical design in England.  It also recognizes the design of the terrace, and the Greek and Roman influences like the arch.
         - Last Call for Planet Earth:  This film discusses the up and coming energy smart homes.  It introduces the sustainability revolution and how architects are developing homes that use 20-30% less energy.  They are using old buildings to create new ones.  They are finding to techniques to save energy and money, like developing underfloor heating and cooling systems.

2.)  These videos relate to the readings in the text by describing the design techniques of architecture. The third film, Classical Architecture, really went in depth and related to the text by describing the influence that the Greeks and Romans had on the architectural world.  They also describe materials used like the text does, especially the use of concrete.

3.) I feel that the films were very interesting.  I got a sense of what classical architecture is like, and how it has influenced the modern world.  Also I have seen what is new to the architectural world, like the new advance technology used.  I see more understanding in how long it takes for the design to emerge before building.

4.)  I chose Last Call for Planet Earth because, I know that sustainable energy is our future.  I am really into using less energy and being more resourceful and this film really showed what is in store for architectural design.  It was great see ways that architects are using to be more resourceful, like using materials from old buildings.  It is just great to get a glimpse of what might be coming in the future for buildings and homes.

Installation Art

REFLECT
1.) Installation art is art that is installed.  According to the video, it "defines and takes over space."  It is art the "is all around you," it is also "art of the moment." Installation art can also be defined as artwork that is 3D, it is art that enables the viewer to interact with what is around them.

2.)  The materials that installation art uses is ANYTHING!  From TVs to flowers, installation art uses all materials.  It is up to the artist to use whatever they want, and whatever will get their artwork across to the public.

3.) The point to making installation art is to allow objects to come together and interact to form a piece of art.  Artists use installation art because they want to use several mediums together, and installation art allows for the artist to take all kinds of materials and put them together. It allows the public to interact and engage with the artists artwork, and that allows viewers to understand the meaning behind the piece.

4.) In the video, I found, "Mother and Daughter Divided," to be the most interesting installation.  When looking at it I understood the meaning, which was to describe that people are separated and feel divided.  The point was to say that it is hard to hold your self together, while you are feeling so apart and separated from others.

PLAN
1.) I felt a connection with one of the installations in the reading.  The Red Room, by Louise Bourgeois is amazing and real. The first installation with the door shut made me react because I always feel as if there are secrets going on between closed doors.  When the second installations reveals the interior of the room with the spool of threads and all the contents were red, I felt the essence of the room and how all the spools of thread were connected.

2.)  The theme I want to use in my installation art piece is the theme of nature, and how nature brings changes to you world!

3.) The materials I have chosen to use include two mirrors, and leaves from the trees in my backyard.

4.) I put my installation art piece outside on my porch.  I chose this area because my theme is nature, and what better place to put nature is to put it in its home.

FINAL WORK

Describe: I entitle my work as "Changes."  I have chosen leaves as the focal point for my piece.  The way leaves change during each season is beautiful.  I believe that leaves are a metaphor for all changes.  Change is a cycle that takes place in everyday life, we all change just like leaves to and we all might fall off the way leaves fall off trees, but we resurface as do leaves.  I decided to put the leaves on the mirror to show the importance of reflection and how each and every person can see changes and the reflection just bounces off one another.

Analyze: The elements and principles used in my installation include color, because the leaves have some much brightness and color. Light, the sunlight reflects of the mirror bringing and light tone to the art.  The mirror also provides a sense of form, and how it kind of gives a 3D feel to the leaves.  The various leaves give rhythm, as they all contain the same shape.

When creating the site specific installation I felt  the purpose was for me to really think and look inside myself and come up with a piece that described how I see the world.  When I came up with looking at leaves, which lead to changes, I felt that I had something going and I just went with it.  I felt the process was very refreshing and fun to do!

Reviewing Peer Responses to Artwork

http://emsartsy.blogspot.com/
1.) When looking at project #1, I felt that all the pictures in the slideshow were perfect, and really showed that elements and principles. Each picture had the perfect label and example for the various principles and elements.  When going through the images I saw that the example for color, which was a red-orange leaf could also be considered emphasis, because it drew by eye right into that leaf.

2.) When looking at project #2, I saw two pictures that I chose as well. The first was the "Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash."  The blogger wanted to know more about the piece and she also explained that she had two dachshunds at home just like the one in the piece.  I picked the image because I felt connected with it because I saw it in the book, and because I also have a dachshund at home.  The second same artwork was "Convergence," the blogger felt a connection with the piece because the meaning that the artist felt of painting. I also picked the piece because I felt a connection, but mine was because I knew about it form the text.

3.) Notre Dame in the Late Afternoon, by Henri Matisse, was a piece that I felt interested in when I saw it on the blog.  This painting caught my eye because I could feel the motion and peace that I believe the artists felt.  It would be amazing to know how to paint that way.  The colors used were so relaxing and peaceful.

http://emilysartisticblog.blogspot.com/
1.)  In project #1, the blogger captured every element and principle in all of the images.  Some of the images actually did have more than one element of principles. For example the value example could have also been for movement because of the fire in the background.  Also the harmony example of the tulip could have also been for color or emphasis.

2.)  For project #2, the painting of Niagara Falls was one I chose too.  She picked it for the same reason, which was the connection to the falls becausee it is both of our hometowns.

3.) When looking at the rest of her images from the gallery, I saw the photo of Erie Lakawanna Railroad.  This black and white photograph amazed me. There is something classic to a black and white photo and this picture had such power to it.  I also felt a connection because it reminds me of when i used to take the train to visit friends.  I could feel those moments when I saw this photograph.

I feel that the process of my peers reflection to be fun.  It is interesting to see what others have come up with over the course, and I get to compare to my work as well.  I think it is valuable to my learning because it allows others and myself to discover the different ways in which we all are defining art.  The several perspectives leads to you to find your own beliefs about art.

I acutally do findit healpful when reading the other comments left by people, it allows me to see were I stand in the art class.

Video Discussion

1.) In the first film, Through the Eyes of a Sculptor, I learned the sculptors process when restoring monuments.  I learned that limestone is an essential tool used in sculpting.  I also saw that the sculptor's really put their feelings into what they are designing.  The second film, Glass and Ceramics, showed how glass is made.  Glass comes from sand, which is mixed with components, then heated up, from there the glass is gathered on a rod then the glass designers blows into the rod to form a shape.  The heated glass is then cooled and permanently formed into a beautiful piece of art.  In the film, Installation Art, I learned that installation art is becoming the "new" thing for the art world.  Installation art is defined by many in the film but I learned that it is 3D artwork that is all around you, the viewer gets to interact in the environment where the artwork is shown.

2.)  The videos relate to the readings in the text by discussing the points of which and how material is used in art.  Through the Eyes of a Sculptor discusses the stone is used, as so does the text.  Also Glass and Ceramics discusses the process of glass and glass stained windows.  Installation Art relates to the text by both describing what installation art is and how it is used in the art world.

3.)  I really enjoyed the films.  I mainly enjoyed the Glass and Ceramics film because I found it interesting to see how glass is made.  I learned that glass comes from sand, which I never knew.  The videos put depth and understanding into sculpture, installation, and crafts by allowing me to see the materials at work. Like in the film, Through the Eyes of a Sculptor, I got to see how carving and limestone is used in sculpture.

Visit to The Albright Knox Art Gallery

1.)The first painting that made an impact on me was entitled "Convergence" by Jackson Pollock.  When I say the painting my eyes were just all over the place, and the use of color was amazing.  You were able to see each individual color, but still the piece came together.  Another painting that made an impression on my was entitled "The Trees" by Andre Derain.  I have always had an interest in trees.  To me, they stand for growing and life.  Seeing the use of color and seeing the trees it made me think of how symbolic they can be.  The last work of art that made an impact on me was "Carnival of Harlequin" by Joan Miro.  I felt that this piece was fun and refreshing. The carnival theme allowed my eyes to move across the photo in a happy uplifting way.

2.)  The art works that I felt a connection with was first "Dynamsim of a Dog on a Leash" by Giacomo Balla.  This painting certainly looked familiar because it is in our textbook.  I feel that I already knew it from the textbook, and I also connected to it because I believe the dog in the painting is a Dachshund, and I own a Dachshund.  The dog reminds me exactly of how my dog is and how fast she can move!  Another piece that I felt a connection with was by anonymous, entitled "View of Niagara Falls."  Of course I know the famous Niagara Falls, and looking at this painting reminded me of visiting the falls when I was a kid.  I could here the splashing water of the roaring falls.  Ted Wesslmann, "Still life #20" caught my eye, and I noticed that I have a past connection to a part of the piece.  I recognized the the painting in the background of the still life by the straight black lines and primary colors. I used to always see that painting in my various art classes in elementary, middle, and high school.  Seeing that allowed me to remember what I used to do in those art classes.

3.) I would like to know more about Arshile Gorky, "The Liver is the Cock's Comb."  I first saw that name and was lost. So a title explanation would be great to know.  Its abstract so it is meant to raise questions, and I am just wondering what is the background story.  I would also like to know more about "Untitled" by Same Francis.  I never understood why an artist may feel that they would need to not name their pieceand i noticed that he had other work that was untitled.  I wonder what the story behind that is, and I also would like to know what the shapes and various colors mean.  I would also like to know about Albert Bierstadt, "Marina Piccolo in Capri."  I loved this painting, its use of light was so beautiful.  I would like to know if the light coming down from the sky has a single meaning.  If it is supposed to be the heavens coming down, or if its just meant to be the sun.

LOGO Design

1.)  When I found out that I needed to create my own logo, I honestly felt a little challenged but I felt excited.  I like doing hands on work, and I was ready to sit down and create a logo that would describe myself.

2.)  The creative process for this project allowed me to open up and really think of of things that reflect who I am as a person.  I started to brainstorm, and I started to write down words and statements ("im not yet complete, im always adding things...") that lead me to think of a PUZZLE.  I believe that my life is a puzzle.  The puzzle idea took off as I started to create my logo...

3.) The most imporatant discovery that I came up with when creating my logo was really the idea of a puzzle piece. When a puzzle piece came into my head I took off and realized the whole foundation for my logo.  I really discovered my life process.  My life is full of puzzle piece's.  Some have come together, and some have not.  My puzzle is not complete yet and that is why you can see in my logo that some puzzle pieces are missing out of my "K."  I also realized that it is okay that I still have not come up with all the pieces, but really, that is how life is supposed to be.

4.) From the reading, the videos, and the powerpoint I have found that the most important information is how a graphic designer creates a logo.  I understand the creative process used like brainstorming, and I understand that several steps that go into a final logo.  It takes time, and a lot of mind searching to be able to grasp alot of information and put it into a little logo.  Its amazing how a little logo contains so much content, it looks easy to design but really I now fully understand that major, time consuming, process of graphic design.  I found the videos to be informational and also interesting.  I am very interested in digital media, and seeing the image process and new media being used was very cool to see.

Material Exploration

1.) I thought that creating the value scale and the color wheel was a great experience.  Making the color wheel was amazing, because you get to see different colors come out of other colors, right before your eyes.  I liked doing these projects because being hands on allowed me to understand the color process better.

2.) I enjoyed working with the paints.  This media was great to work with becuase the colors came alive right before my eyes.  It was easy to make a color from two different colors, and I noticed that painting was also a little relaxing.

3.) The most important discovery in these studies was first to understand the values between light/dark or black/white, and to see the range of the scale.  In the creation of the color wheel, the discovery was to understand how colors are made from one another.  Also, to discover how colors connect and work together for the artist to create their artwork.

4.) The most important thing, that I have learned from watching the videos is that color and values of those colors really make a difference for the artist to get their meaning across to the public.  Having different ranges and different values of color allow the artist to make a masterpiece that is seen in clarifying ways.  I felt the videos were very helpful to understanding color and very interesting.

Project #1 Reflection

I felt this first project was fun and not that difficult.  It was fun going around in my home and outside to find and  capture the design principles and the art elements.  It didn't take me very longer because there were so many things that had the principles and the elements in them.  All I had to do was to look really close and then take the images with my camera.

My Slideshow:
Elements and Principles of Art

Color Theory and Emotional Effects

1.)  Color is what brings pleasure to a particular piece of artwork.  Color allows viewers to experience all kinds of emotions.  For instance, in terms of the colors intensity, whether it is a bold sold intensity, the person can feel bright and happy.  If the intensity is dulled and softened, the viewer can possibly feel relaxed or even a little sad.  Value can also effect a person's emotions.  Value refers to lightness or darkness in art.  If the colors are dark, like black or shades of gray it can have a repressed feeling, if they are light they can have  happy feeling for the viewer.  Color is so powerful in art, and just using a particular color, can allow a person to experience an intense emotional effect.

2.) Light is the theoretical aspect that fascinates me the most. I found it so interesting how the book discussed Newton, who found that color is really just components of light, and that we are only perceiving reflected light rays when we look at a specific color.  It is just amazing how light is able to take away other colors so we see only one color.

3.) In the Color video, I felt that when June was painting a fast piece of the buildings and the river in Venice, that the colors she was using were really bringing out the beauty of Venice.  I felt that the true view of the backstreet was dull, but when she was painting she was using warm and softened colors, which made me view Venice as a gorgeous place.  It just goes to show that color is truly able to effect a persons emotional state.

4.) In the Feelings video, I found the biggest impact on me was the discussion about how reason came into play and how humanists viewed the world.  I liked the statement about perspective, which was  "man thinking differently about what he is." I thought this to be very powerful, and I was able to get a sense of what the Renaissance was like for artists. They painted exactly what human kind was like back then, and any viewer can experience a feeling of differences and perspectives in those paintings.

Art and Aesthetics Video's

1.)  In the video, Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts, I learned the importance of aesthetics has on an artist, artwork, and the viewers.  Aesthetics was discussed and defined as being the philosophical study of art.  The video discussed several philosophies that have been determined in the based on philosophers, and how beauty shapes how people interpret art.
In the video, CARTA: Neurobiology Neurology and Art and Aesthetics, the concepts that I learned came from two very intelligent men in the neurological field.  Changeux, discussed how there is a genetic origin of art, and from the start of the first human, there has been a constant evolution of art.  He brought up that there is a "Esthetic Efficacy" of art which means the emotions and reason that art brings out.  He also states that art is a human production of artifacts and it is a non verbal language for communication.  The second speaker, Ramachandran, discussed his "Eight Laws of Art/Aesthetics."  These laws are what make art universal.  He goes more in depth and speaks about how art is a visual aesthetic and that it creates visual process for audiences.  Art is "pleasing to the eye," he says and that it is a game or challenge to try to find the big picture.

2.)  Kant, is who I believe to be the most important philosopher to the theory of aesthetics. Kant developed his ideas in the 18th century and he felt that aesthetic experience comes from the imagination.  He believed that beauty has no framework or principles when is comes to art.  Meaning that, beauty is based on ones own feelings.  He contributed to many other philosophers beliefs like Schiller and Hegel, who built on his ideas of aesthetics and art.

3.)  I though Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art was very interesting.  They both came up with relevant and various beliefs on how the brain can interpret art.  From Changeux, the most interesting fact I learned from him was how there is a "genetic envelope" which means that art comes from our ancestors.  From Ramachandran, I felt the most interesting fact was that art is basically a visual process or a game, and when someone looks at a work of art they are being challenged to find the meaning.  Once the meaning is found, the person is astonished to have completed the visual process.

4.) The videos relate to the readings in the text by teaching the the viewers on how to look at art.  The videos just gave more ways on how one can interpret a piece of artwork.  They both explain how aesthetics is important in the art world, and that in fact art can make a viewer feel emotion and feeling for what they are seeing.

5.) I felt that the first film, Aesthetics: The Philosophy of the Arts, was insightful.  I was able to view how various philosophers felt about art in early centuries.  I was also able to see how the meaning of art has evolved, and how it will keep on evolving throughout time.  The second film, was very interesting.  I never thought how the brain can interact with the viewing of art in a number of ways.  The films have given depth to the readings by allowing myself to always be thinking about HOW I am going to interpret art, and how my brain is going to interpret art.

First Blog

1.) The process of creating my own GMail accout was simple! Along with GMail, setting up my blog was also very easy.  Both were no big deal and anyone can simply create an account and a blog by reading and following simple steps.

2.)  For this online class, I expect to learn a number of things.  I expect to learn about several artists, and about the artists' work.  Also, I expect to learn the different types of techniques used to create art and the many different forms of art out in the world.

3.)  I feel that taking an online course is the right thing for me.  I have taken one other online course in the past so I kind of know what to expect.  I think that taking an online course allows me to go at my own pace, and I am hoping that I will enjoy taking this class.
